Job Duties

The Investigator title series was created effective June 16, 2016, and consolidated a wide variety of investigative titles.  Please visit Frequently Asked Questions for further information regarding this consolidation and Investigator Title Listing for a list of the titles consolidated.

As an Investigator 2, you would supervise multiple Investigator 1 staff and perform the more sensitive or complex investigations requiring greater knowledge and interpretation of the agency's laws, rules and regulations. You would schedule and assign cases to subordinate staff based on program priorities and individual workloads and abilities; plan scope and method of investigation and coordinate field activities of assigned staff; provide guidance and assistance to assigned staff in gathering and evaluating information and evidence, conducting background checks, and on investigative techniques and changes in agency policy and procedures; review completed investigation reports for adequacy of coverage, quality of findings, and soundness of recommendations and/or make recommendations consistent with findings and agency policy and practice; prepare periodic status reports for higher level staff; participate in intergovernmental and/or interagency task forces; and personally investigate difficult and sensitive cases using a variety of investigative techniques, including gathering and verifying information, interviewing witnesses and complainants, and reviewing electronic and paper documents. These positions exist only in the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance, New York State Gaming Commission, New York State Department of State, New York State Department of Transportation, New York State Department of Criminal Justice Services, and New York State Department of Health.

As an Investigator 2 (Compensation Claims), in addition to the above duties, you would supervise the performance of investigations of workers' compensation and disability benefit claims in accordance with the Workers' Compensation Law and New York State Insurance Fund's (NYSIF) investigative policies and procedures. These positions exist only in the NYSIF.

Summary of Minimum Qualifications

You must take and pass a Civil Service examination in order to be considered for this position.

On or before the date of the examination, you must be a qualified employee of New York State and have had three months of permanent competitive or 55-b/55-c service as an Investigator 1, Investigator 1 (Chinese Language), Investigator 1 (Korean Language), Investigator 1 (Spanish Language), Investigator, Investigator (Spanish Language), License Investigator 1, License Investigator 1 (Chinese Language), License Investigator 1 (Korean Language), License Investigator 1 (Spanish Language), Compensation Claims Investigator 1, or Rent Administration Investigator 1.
