Summary of Job Description

As an Employees Retirement System Examiner 2, you would perform a variety of tasks related to the processing and maintenance of member and employer applications and data in the New York State and Local Retirement Systems. In this capacity, you would develop familiarity with the laws, rules, regulations, legal opinions, and established written procedures of New York State and Local Retirement Systems; interpret the Retirement and Social Security Law and communicate complex benefit information to systems members; determine eligibility and benefit payments; perform high level complex calculations that have long-term fiscal implications for retirees and the Retirement Systems; answer telephone inquiries and respond to correspondence and emails from employers, members, pensioners, beneficiaries, and others; prepare various written materials and reports; provide technical direction and assistance to staff and others; and you may train, mentor, and supervise lower-level clerical staff.

Summary of Minimum Qualifications

You must take and pass a Civil Service Examination in order to be considered for this position. There are two examinations held for this position.

For all qualified employees of New York State, on or before the date of the examination, you must have had two months of permanent competitive or 55-b/55-c service:

Either A. as an Office Assistant 2, Office Assistant 2 (Spanish Language), Clerk 2, Clerk 2 (Spanish Language), Office Assistant 2 (Calculations), Office Assistant 2 (Calculations) (Spanish Language), Office Assistant 2 (Calculations) (Chinese Language), Calculations Clerk 2, Calculations Clerk 2 (Spanish Language), Office Assistant 2 (Customer Service), Office Assistant 2 (Customer Service) (Spanish Language), Office Assistant 2 (Customer Service) (Chinese Language), Agency Services Representative, Agency Services Representative (Spanish Language), Office Assistant 2 (Keyboarding), Office Assistant 2 (Keyboarding) (Spanish Language), Keyboard Specialist 2, Keyboard Specialist 2 (Spanish Language), Call Center Representative 1, or Call Center Representative 1 (Spanish Language).

Or B.in a position allocated to a Grade 9 or higher.

For all other qualified individuals, on or before the date of the examination, candidates must have:

Either A. two years of experience performing at least one of the following tasks: reconciling accounts, calculating payments, collecting and analyzing statistics and information, or explaining policy or benefit information to the general public. Acceptable experience may include, but is not limited to, experience as law clerk/paralegal in a law firm or court, hospital/physician’s business office representative, health/dental/vision insurance carrier customer service representative. Note: retail cashier/sales clerk experience with the primary function of checking out customers at a register will NOT be considered as qualifying for this examination.

Or B. an associate’s degree or higher or 60 semester credit hours of college-level study.

Or C. 30 semester credit hours of college-level study and one year of the experience described above.
