Summary of Job Description

As an Information Technology Specialist 2, you would perform or assist in performing technical and agency program support of IT activities related to network and system design, configuration, maintenance, and security; customer support; business/systems analysis and design which may include web site development and administration of a transactional, dynamic or interactive web site; and the design and development of database systems.

Summary of Minimum Qualifications

You must take and pass a Civil Service examination in order to be considered for this position.

There are two examinations for this position. Please note: New York State employees may qualify for both.

For employees of New York State, on or before the date of filing an application, the candidate must be a qualified employee of the New York State agency for which the examination is being held and have ten (10) months of permanent competitive or 55-b/55-c service as an Information Technology Specialist 1, Information Technology Specialist 1 (Programming), or Information Technology Specialist 2 (Special Expertise).

For all other qualified individuals, on or before the date of filing and application, candidates must have either:

1. A bachelor's or higher-level degree in computer science, computer information systems, telecommunications, or management information systems;

OR

2. a bachelor's or higher-level degree, including or supplemented by 15 credit hours in computer science courses;

OR

3. a bachelor's or higher-level degree in any field and at least one year of the experience in the following computer related areas: network, server, storage, and systems management; telecommunications; IT customer support and training; computer installation, diagnosis and repair; technical writing; computer security; knowledge management; database administration, design and management; internet/intranet development, design, and maintenance; information technology project management; design and development of geographic information systems or computer aided drafting applications; computer programming; business/systems analysis; program design; or program testing;

OR

4. a minimum of 60 college semester credit hours including at least 15 credit hours in computer science courses and one year of the experience described in #3;

OR

5. a total of two years of experience as described in #3.
