Job Duties

As a Manager Information Technology Services 1 (Technical), you would plan, direct, and coordinate activities in any combination of two or more of the Information Resource Management (IRM) technical specialties. The specialties include database, data communications, operations, and systems programming.

Summary of Minimum Qualifications

There are two examinations for this position. Please note: New York State employees may qualify for both.

On or before the date of the examination, you must have:

Either 1. a bachelor's or higher level degree in any field including or supplemented by 15 semester credit hours in computer science AND four years of experience in the following computed related areas, including one year of supervisory experience: computer programming, network, server, storage, and systems management; telecommunications, IT customer support and training; computer installation, diagnosis, and repair; technical writing; computer security; knowledge management; database administration, design and management; internet/intranet development, design, and maintenance; information technology project management; design and development of geographic information systems or computer aided drafting applications; computer programming; business/systems analysis; program design; or program testing;

Or 2. a bachelor's or higher level degree in any field AND five years of experience in computer related areas, as described in #1 above, including one year of supervisory experience;

Or 3. an associate's degree* with 15 semester credit hours in a computer science field AND six years of experience in computer related areas as described in #1 above, including one year supervisory experience;

Or 4. seven years of experience in computer related areas described in #1 above, including one year of supervisory experience.

Definition: For the purposes of this examination, Supervisory Experience is defined as the responsibility for assigning work and overseeing subordinate staff or project(s) in an Information Technology (IT) environment.

*Candidates who have completed at least 60 college semester hours in a bachelor's degree program, including at least 15 semester credit hours in a computer science field, also qualify, but must meet the experience requirements as described in #3.

If you expect to meet the educational requirements by June 30, 2018, you can be admitted to the written test, but you cannot be considered for appointment until you submit proof of successful completion of the educational requirement to the Appointing Authority at the time of the employment interview. Failure to meet the educational requirements by June 30, 2018, may result in your removal from the eligible list.

OR

On or before the date of the examination, you must be a qualified employee of New York State and have had 45 days of permanent competitive or 55-b/55-c service as a Chief Computer Operator, Information Technology Specialist 3, Information Technology Specialist 3 (Data Communications), Information Technology Specialist 3 (Database), Information Technology Specialist 3 (Programming), Information Technology Specialist 3 (Systems Programming), Information Technology Specialist 4, Information Technology Specialist 4 (Data Communications), Information Technology Specialist 4 (Database), Information Technology Specialist 4 (Operations), or Information Technology Specialist 4 (Systems Programming).

Only the title or titles listed are qualifying.

**If you were permanently appointed to a qualifying title on or before October 26, 2022, and have served continuously in this title since that date, you are eligible to file for this examination.
