Summary of Job Description

As a Verbatim Reporter 1, you would record verbatim multi-voiced testimony and/or dialogue at hearings and other proceedings by use of manual shorthand notes or appropriate machinery to make an accurate verbatim record; maintains, through notation, a record of all non-verbal incidents related to the proceedings, including witnesses sworn, exhibits entered and by which party, off the record discussions, type of testimony, identification of speakers, etc.; read back notes of prior testimony and colloquy at direction of the presider; transcribe notes by using computer-aided transcription equipment and other methods, such as audio recordings, to produce verbatim transcripts; prepares transcripts in approved format; maintain listing of pending and completed transcripts, submits status reports and answers inquiries regarding transcripts; file and maintain notes, material and completed transcripts in an approved format following Board procedures.

Summary of Minimum Qualifications

You must take and pass a Civil Service examination in order to be considered for this position.

Candidates must have: possession of a certificate of completion of a two-year course/degree in court reporting or verbatim reporting from a nationally or regionally accredited school or institution or one recognized by the New York State Education Department (you will be required to furnish a copy at the time of the application); OR

Two years of satisfactory experience in general verbatim reporting; OR

Possession of documentation confirming proficiency of at least 180 words per minute from a nationally or regionally accredited school or institution or one recognized by the New York State Education Department. (You will be required to furnish a copy at the time of the application.)
