Summary of Job Description

Education Directors, in general, plan, direct and coordinate all educational activities in a State facility. They supervise curriculum development, maintain an in-service training program for teachers, allocate equipment and materials, and prepare tentative school budgets. They also participate in the development of cooperative projects for improvement of the program.

The level of the titles within this career ladder vary based on the level of supervision, complexity of the duties involved, degree of independent judgment, etc.

Summary of Minimum Qualifications

You must take and pass a Civil Service examination in order to be considered for this position.

There are three examinations held for this position.

For qualified employees of New York State on or before the date of filing applications, you must be a qualified employee of the New York State Office of Children and Family Services and have had permanent competitive or 55-b/55-c service as follows:

Either A: one year as an Education Supervisor (Vocational) or Education Supervisor (General)
Or B: two years as a Youth Education Coordinator;
In addition, you must have a current permanent or provisional Principal's, Supervisor's, School Administrator and Supervisor's or permanent School District Administrator's certificate issued by the New York State Education Department.

For all other qualified individuals you must have a permanent or provisional Principal's, Supervisor's, School Administrator and Supervisor's or permanent School District Administrator's certificate; AND one year of administrative or supervisory experience in education.

For all other qualified individuals you must have a permanent teaching certificate in special education; AND a permanent Principal's, Supervisor's, School Administrator and Supervisor's or School District Administrator's certificate; AND one year of administrative or supervisory experience in education.
