Summary of Job Description

Incumbents of these positions oversee a comprehensive education and training program for facility staff, including employees in community-based programs. Supervise training staff in developing and conducting education and training programs and in providing educational and career-related information to employees. Monitor training initiatives for compliance with mandated accreditation requirements.

Summary of Minimum Qualifications

You must take and pass a Civil Service examination in order to be considered for this position

The Director Staff Development and Training 1 exams are used to fill this position.

There are two examinations held for this position, one open to New York State employees and one open to all qualified individuals.    

For the examination open to New York State employees, you must be a qualified employee of the New York State Office of Mental Health or the New York State Office For People With Developmental Disabilities and have had three months of permanent competitive service as:

Either A. a Mental Hygiene Staff Development Specialist 4;
Or B. a Mental Hygiene Staff Development Specialist 3 or Mental Hygiene Staff Development Specialist 3 (Nursing).

For the examination open to all qualified individuals, you must have a bachelor's degree in a human services field* AND six years of post-degree experience in the development, delivery, and management of staff development programs in a mental hygiene setting.** Two years of this experience must have been in a supervisory position in a setting providing services to individuals diagnosed with mental retardation, mental illness, or alcohol and substance abuse with responsibility for all or a major part of a comprehensive staff development program.

* For the purposes of these examinations, a human services field includes disciplines related to the following: addiction studies, child and family studies, communication, communication disorders, community health, medicine, education, gerontology, health administration, human services, nursing, nutrition, occupational therapy, physical therapy, psychology, recreation therapy, creative arts therapy, rehabilitation counseling, social work, and sociology.

** For the purposes of these examinations, a mental hygiene setting is one which is primarily serving individuals diagnosed with mental retardation, developmental disabilities, or mental illness.
