The Department of Law defends suits against the State, its officials or agencies, and prosecutes violations of State law. The Department includes the Attorney General, who is elected by the people of New York State. The Department of Law acts on behalf of citizens in the areas of consumer protection, civil rights, workers' rights, and utility rates. It also initiates civil and criminal prosecutions of violations of environmental law.
