The Department of State (DOS) is the oldest agency in the administration of New York State government. The Department oversees many programs which provide a variety of services to citizens, community organizations, business, and local governments. The diversity of these programs range from: the administration of federal funds for coastal revitalization, responsibility for constituent access through the Freedom of Information Act, issuance of certificates for incorporation, licensing real estate brokers, notaries public and certain other occupations, to the implementation of the first toxicity data bank, a part of the NYS Uniform Fire Prevention and Building Code.
