The Department of Motor Vehicles serves over 20 million customers each year in the course of issuing driver's licenses and vehicle registrations, conducting road tests, developing traffic safety initiatives, adjudicating traffic violations in some localities, and regulating motor vehicle-related businesses. The Department exists to enhance traffic safety, to provide consumer protection and information services, and to assist other government agencies to achieve their missions. It collects fees and generates non-tax revenue to support these objectives.
